ENDOMETRIOSIS
This is a condition where the tissue that normally lines your uterus, known as the endometrium, grows in other parts of the body – often in the ovaries, bowel, or lining of the stomach (the peritoneum).
These growths can become bigger each month as a result of the monthly menstrual process. Similar to the way the endometrial lining of the uterus builds up with the blood that is lost during your period, these growths can bleed – they can also cause inflammation, internal scaring and, in extreme cases, infertility.
Some women with endometriosis have few symptoms, while others experience severe and debilitating pelvic pain.
Treatments undertaken by Dr Heron include prescribing medication for pain relief and inflammation control and in some cases, laparoscopic surgery to remove the tissue growths.
