COLPOSCOPY

When your symptoms require a close look at your cervix (the entrance to the uterus) Dr Heron will carry out a simple painless procedure called a colposcopy using a special lit microscope called a colposcope.

Similar to the procedure followed with a Pap smear, an instrument called a speculum is inserted into the vagina. The colposcope is then inserted and the bright light directed onto the cervix.

Dr Heron will carry out a colposcopy if your Pap smear has shown abnormal or cancerous cells on the cervix. During the examination, he will take samples of tissue (biopsies) for analysis in the laboratory.
