ENDOMETRIAL ABLATION

An endometrial ablation is a surgical procedure in which the lining of the uterus, the endometrium, is removed or destroyed – it can be an alternative treatment to a full hysterectomy for women who suffer with very heavy periods (menorrhagia).

The operation is carried out through the vagina, with different methods used to destroy the endometrium including electricity, laser therapy or freezing. An easier process than a full hysterectomy with a quicker recovery period, it is offered as a day case procedure and, in some circumstances, can be performed under local anaesthetic.

The healing process leaves scarring on the endometrium which usually causes menstrual periods to reduce or stop which means this surgery is only an option for women who no longer wish to have children.
