HYSTERECTOMY

A hysterectomy is the surgical operation to remove the uterus (womb) and, depending on the reason for the treatment, other organs in the reproductive system.

Some conditions require removal of the uterus only, others involve removal of the uterus and cervix; removal of the uterus, cervix and ovaries or, in the case of a ‘radical hysterectomy’, removal of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes, lymph nodes and, in some circumstances, part of the vagina.

Dr Heron performs hysterectomies for a number of conditions including heavy menstrual periods, fibroids, endometriosis, prolapse and gynaecological cancers. The operation can be carried out abdominally, through an incision or cut, or through the vagina.
