NATURAL HORMONE THERAPY

With the onset of the menopause, the ovaries slow down on the production of female hormones - that is, oestrogen, usually with progesterone. It is this declining in oestrogen that causes the hot flushes and bone density loss that many women experience at this time.

Natural hormone therapy can bring relief to some of these symptoms.
When prescribing this treatment, Dr Heron will use bio-identical hormones of plant origin where possible – that is, hormones that are manufactured to have exactly the same molecular structure as those made naturally by the body, including testosterone that is used to help with libido and energy problems.

Natural hormone therapy is usually administered as a skin cream – synthetic hormones can be taken as tablets, implants or skin patches. Dr Heron and his wife, registered kinesiologist Angela Heron, can also give advice on complementary nutritional supplements and lifestyle changes.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) declined in popularity following a study in the US that concluded long-term HRT use can increase the risk of serious conditions such as breast cancer and blood clots. However, when used for no more than three or four years, HRT can bring welcome relief to women suffering with severe menopausal symptoms.

If you are considering HRT, Dr Heron will discuss the risks and benefits of the treatment to ensure you are thoroughly informed and knowledgeable.
